It is a bleak life for the approximately 60,000 dogs and 20,000 cats used in testing and research in U.S. laboratories each year. In March, we revealed the sad plight of some of these animals when we did an undercover investigation at a contract laboratory in Michigan that was testing pesticides, drugs, dental implants and more on beagles and hounds.

What could an ingredient company possibly learn from forcing animals to swim until they nearly drown? Your guess is as good as ours, but thankfully, PETA scientists have persuaded a Dutch company to give up the cruel, worthless experiment.

Last Friday, Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu brought forward Bill S-214, the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, for its first reading in the Canadian parliament. This is a major step forward in our campaign to end cosmetics animal testing and the sale of animal-tested cosmetics in Canada and around the world.

A new scientific publication by the Cruelty Free International science team, looking at whether drug tests on animals help predict human responses, has been published in the scientific journal BMC Medical Ethics. The paper shows how after decades of animal use in human drug development, there is little evidence to support using animals in drug tests, or to suggest that animals can effectively predict how people will react to drugs.
