Origins (2014)

“This is a movie about how we have left the natural connection to the planet. The movie investigates how this has happened, the incredible amounts of pollutants that we are exposed to, even as a fetus, and the technology that can help resolve these challenges over time. In short, it is an important case that is made for using renewable energy. The Origins narrator states: “The macrocosm and the microcosm are reflections of each other, and what we see on a large scale, will inevitably show up on a smaller scale and vice versa. With this in mind, we need to look at the health of our planet in order to understand what is happening in our own lives.” Tom Malterre adds: “We’re up to 74 billion pounds of chemicals being produced or imported into the United States every single day. That’s 250 pounds per person per day…. That number does not even include pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fuels and food additives…. So, what are we doing? We are swimming now in chemicals.””

Organizing Cools The Planet

Hard copy booklet or free PDF: “Organizing Cools The Planet offers a challenge to all concerned about the ecological crisis: find your frontline. This booklet weaves together stories, analysis, organizing tools, and provocative questions, to offer a snapshot of the North American Climate Justice movement and provide pathways for readers to participate in it. Authors share hard lessons learned, reflect on strategy, and grapple with the challenges of their roles as organizers who do not come from “frontline communities” but work to build a movement big enough for everyone and led by the priorities and solutions of low-income people, communities of color, Indigenous, youth, and other constituencies most directly impacted by the crisis. Rooted in the authors’ experiences organizing in local, national, and international arenas, they challenge readers to look at the scale of ecological collapse with open eyes, without falling prey to disempowering doomsday narratives. This booklet is for anyone who wants to build a movement with the resiliency to navigate one of the most rapid transitions in human history.”

One Step for Animals

“In short, One Step works to reduce the number of animals suffering as much as possible. Five hard facts drive One Step: 1. The vast majority of land animals who suffer in the United States today are birds. 2. Almost every argument for vegetarianism or veganism applies much more to avoiding red meat than birds – environmental and health arguments especially. 3. It takes more than 200 chickens to provide the same number of meals as one cow. 4. While beef consumption has fallen over the decades, chicken consumption has risen significantly. After a few years of decline, per capita consumption of animals in the US is currently at an all-time high and continuing to move higher, despite all advocacy efforts. (See graph below.) That means the average person in the US is causing more suffering than ever before. 5.The vast majority of individuals (~80%) who go vegetarian or vegan go back to eating animals, becoming active advocates against a compassionate diet. “

Nonviolent Peaceforce

“Nonviolent Peaceforce is a global non-profit organization. We protect civilians in violent conflicts through unarmed strategies. We build peace side-by-side with local communities. We advocate for wider adoption of these approaches to safeguard human lives and dignity…We most often respond to invitations by credible local organizations committed to nonviolent solutions. Once invited, we meet key players, including commanders from opposing sides, local police, religious, business, and civil society leaders. We live and work in communities within conflict zones alongside local people. When violence erupts, civilians under threat often contact us. They know and trust us. We have been living among them. Visibly nonpartisan and unarmed, we arrive in NP uniforms, with NP vehicles, letting our presence be known. We build the confidence and safety of civilians deeply affected by conflict so they can access available structures and mechanisms for addressing problems and grievances. Our activities have ranged from entering active conflict zones to remove civilians in the crossfire to providing opposing factions a safe space to negotiate. Other activities include serving as a communication link between warring factions, securing safe temporary housing for civilians displaced by war, providing violence prevention measures during elections and negotiating the return of kidnapped family members.”

No Logo: Brands. Globalization. Resistance. (2003)

“In the age of the brand, logos are everywhere. But why do some of the world’s best-known brands find themselves on the wrong end of the spray paint can — the targets of anti-corporate campaigns by activists and protesters? No Logo, based on the best-selling book by Canadian journalist and activist Naomi Klein, reveals the reasons behind the backlash against the increasing economic and cultural reach of multinational companies. Analyzing how brands like Nike,The Gap, and Tommy Hilfiger became revered symbols worldwide, Klein argues that globalization is a process whereby corporations discovered that profits lay not in making products (outsourced to low-wage workers in developing countries), but in creating branded identities people adopt in their lifestyles. Using hundreds of media examples, No Logo shows how the commercial takeover of public space, destruction of consumer choice, and replacement of real jobs with temporary work – the dynamics of corporate globalization – impact everyone, everywhere. It also draws attention to the democratic resistance arising globally to challenge the hegemony of brands.”

New Zealand Companion Animal Council

“Throughout New Zealand there are many individuals, organisations and official bodies that are actively concerned both with the welfare and control of companion animals. The diverse nature of their philosophy and operational modus operandi creates a need for communication and the sharing of ideas so that collectively, and by consensus, each and every one of them can contribute to the improvement of the welfare of companion animals in their areas of activity. It was this ideology that prompted the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to initiate the formation of a forum which would bring together the many and varied animal groups in an open meeting for an exchange of views and ideas. The gathering in 1990 was named the Companion Animal Workshop, and it has been an annual event ever since. As the workshops grew in importance, and the intensity of the discussions developed into meaningful welfare concerns, it became apparent that the participants craved a structure whereby the resolutions of the meetings could be more actively pursued and topics raised could be further advanced. As a result the New Zealand Companion Animal Council (NZCAC) was established in February 1996, and has since become a respected national organisation representing the amalgam of a diverse range of animal groups.”
