CANE has been formed as an umbrella group comprising community organisations, residents’ associations, NGOs, academics, professionals, unionists, environmentalists and ordinary citizens now grappling with the spectre of nuclear developments in their back yards. Bure Stop

“This project of gigantic ATOMIC UNDERGROUND POUBELLE at least 500m underground has been underway since 1994, as a result of the 1991 law on the management of nuclear waste. The second law of June 2006 focused on BURE, a clay site in the Meuse , near the Haute-Marne, via a pseudo “laboratory” of geological research. The third law of 2016 activates the beginning of Cigeo , via a so-called “pilot phase”, which has nothing to do with research. This is the first industrial phase of the project (about 25% of the estimated total cost!). In 2019, Andra must file its application for authorization to create (DAC) and the worksite would then start, if granted. However, many preparatory works, very controversial on the ground, were launched at the end of 2015. 15 km2 are annexed between 4 Meuse villages : Bure, Ribeaucourt, Bonnet and Mandres to build huge infrastructure and 300 km of galleries. A future no man’s land? Who can want to live near such a site? This landfill project, refocused today at BURE, concerned 25 sites in France and is the object of very strong mobilizations and oppositions … which are not ready to finish.”

Wind-Works

“Following a trip to Denmark in 1980, I’ve stressed the theme that wind energy does indeed work, makes economic and environmental sense, and is here to stay. Even then Denmark was a model of how successful wind energy could become–when given the opportunity. In North America at the time, there were few wind turbines and only a few of those operated well. Most simply didn’t work. My slogan was as much a statement of what could be as it was a statement of fact. Today, wind turbines are commonplace throughout the world and “wind works”, once a bold statement, now elicits a “What? Of course it does. Everyone knows that.” And that’s the way it should be.”

The future is renewable

“Switzerland has everything it takes to secure its long-term supply on the basis of predominantly domestic and renewable energy sources and energy efficiency: natural, economic and financial resources as well as technological know-how. In order for the energy transition to succeed, it needs a clear framework, including as far as the nuclear phase-out is concerned. Nuclear power plants pose an unnecessary and unacceptable threat. They pollute the environment at all pre and post stages and leave nuclear waste behind. In addition, the construction of new nuclear power plants will hinder the development of a secure power supply with renewable energies and prevent incentives for (electricity) energy efficiency. The members of the Alliance nuclear phase-out commit themselves to the common goal of stopping the production of atomic energy. They are making political efforts to avert the construction of new nuclear power plants in Switzerland. “

The Atom: A Love Affair

“Nearly everyone has an opinion about nuclear power but far fewer know its history and the complex social and political forces that have shaped it. Unlike so many other documentaries about nuclear power, ‘The Atom: A Love Affair’ does not try to argue one side of the debate or the other. Instead, the film takes viewers behind the sensational news headlines to tell the inside story of how we got here, over seven eventful decades in the United States, Britain, France & Germany. A tale of scientific passion and political intrigue all wrapped up in the packaging of a sentimental screen melodrama, it takes us on a tragicomic journey through the turbulent and often-forgotten history of nuclear energy, brought vividly to life by those who were actually there. Capturing both the tantalising promise and the repeated disappointments of this singular technology, the film reveals how the post-war, romantic fantasy of an atom-powered future developed into the stormy, on-off relationship still playing out today. Now, as a new 21st century landscape of smart, flexible and decentralised energy rapidly evolves around it, could it really be the end of the affair for the once mighty atom?”
