Climate Change & Colleges – How Campuses & Students Are Helping to Save the Planet

“Humans played a big role in the changes to the earth’s climate over the last century, and scientists predict catastrophic problems if climate change goes unchecked. America is the second largest contributor to carbon dioxide in the world but accounts for only 4.4% of the global population, which means people in the U.S. can make great strides in the fight against climate change with the right tools, information, and resources. College is a great place to start, and there are many opportunities for involvement as a student. See what climate change experts have to say on the matter and learn more about the different ways you can get involved on campus and beyond.”

Chomping Climate Change – Blog

Blog. “Chomping Climate Change addresses the failure of politicians for more than 20 years to implement international policies on climate change. Now most people don’t trust what politicians say about climate change. But we explain that there’s a fast and inexpensive opportunity to reverse climate change – by replacing most of today’s least eco-friendly food products with better alternatives. Raising animals for food uses an estimated 45% of all land on earth, and most of that land was once forested – and it can be reforested with trees that will draw down carbon from our atmosphere to a safe level.”

Chasing Ice

Film: “In the spring of 2005, acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog headed to the Arctic on a tricky assignment for National Geographic: to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth’s changing climate. Even with a scientific upbringing, Balog had been a skeptic about climate change. But that first trip north opened his eyes to the biggest story in human history and sparked a challenge within him that would put his career and his very well-being at risk. Chasing Ice is the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Within months of that first trip to Iceland, the photographer conceived the boldest expedition of his life: The Extreme Ice Survey. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. As the debate polarizes America and the intensity of natural disasters ramps up globally, Balog finds himself at the end of his tether. Battling untested technology in subzero conditions, he comes face to face with his own mortality. It takes years for Balog to see the fruits of his labor. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Chasing Ice depicts a photographer trying to deliver evidence and hope to our carbon-powered planet.”

Changing the Game: Animal Liberation in the Twenty-First Century

“Norm Phelps has long been one of the leading theoreticians, historians, and strategists of the animal advocacy movement. His new book collects his recent writings on this subject, as well as offers in print for the first time a fully revised and updated version of the e-book he published with Lantern in 2013 (978-1-59056-379-3). Phelps argues that faced with the overwhelming wealth and power of the animal exploitation industries, animal activists are like David trying to stand up to Goliath. But rather than following the unsuccessful strategies of the past, Phelps proposes that we change the game by adopting David’s strategy of refusing to play by Goliath’s rules. Additional essays explore class and race in animal advocacy, the place of public policy vs. private morality in creating social change, and the unyielding barrier of human exceptionalism. Trenchant, wise, and deeply committed to the reduction of suffering and the liberation of animals, Changing the Game is sure to offer animal advocates much food for thought as the movement charts a way forward for all sentient beings. “

So, as November comes around, we turn our minds again to find some way in which we can promote the memory of these two prophetic heroes who tried to integrate their own traditional spirituality with the stories of resistance in the Christian scriptures which they knew well. In doing so, they developed a practice of non-violent resistance which is part of a world-wide movement reaching into our own time. We are working to see that they are given full recognition in this their own land among other such leaders, both international and indigenous, who have sought the path of reconciliation and the non-violent resolution of conflict in the spirit of the peace of Christ.”

Bure Stop

“This project of gigantic ATOMIC UNDERGROUND POUBELLE at least 500m underground has been underway since 1994, as a result of the 1991 law on the management of nuclear waste. The second law of June 2006 focused on BURE, a clay site in the Meuse , near the Haute-Marne, via a pseudo “laboratory” of geological research. The third law of 2016 activates the beginning of Cigeo , via a so-called “pilot phase”, which has nothing to do with research. This is the first industrial phase of the project (about 25% of the estimated total cost!). In 2019, Andra must file its application for authorization to create (DAC) and the worksite would then start, if granted. However, many preparatory works, very controversial on the ground, were launched at the end of 2015. 15 km2 are annexed between 4 Meuse villages : Bure, Ribeaucourt, Bonnet and Mandres to build huge infrastructure and 300 km of galleries. A future no man’s land? Who can want to live near such a site? This landfill project, refocused today at BURE, concerned 25 sites in France and is the object of very strong mobilizations and oppositions … which are not ready to finish.”

This is a must-read for climate activists, policymakers, citizen advocates, sustainable tech and design professionals—anyone with an interest in what it takes to advance visionary and practical solutions to climate disruption. Over the past decade, California has managed to decouple the growth of greenhouse gas emissions and the economy, reducing per capita emissions by 17% while maintaining one of the most robust economies in the U.S. With nearly 200,000 clean energy jobs, a vibrant economy, and poised to invest literally hundreds of billions of dollars into a low carbon economy, the world’s eighth largest economic engine is positioning itself as a model for the world. In the fall of 2014, as part of the 25th annual Bioneers Conference, Bioneers convened a very special gathering of key leaders to help start a conversation that seemed long overdue: California’s leadership role in the global effort to combat climate change. This volume, taken from talks given at the 2014 event, is both an accessible and detailed look at some of the key areas where California is particularly out in front.”

Beyond Carnism

“Beyond Carnism is a US-based, international organization dedicated to exposing and transforming carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals. Carnism causes extensive suffering. Animal agriculture is responsible for the unnecessary slaughter of 77 billion land animals worldwide per year, and it is a major contributor to environmental degradation, human disease, and human rights violations. However, the majority of people who eat animals are unaware that they are contributing to such destruction. At Beyond Carnism, we believe that people need and deserve to know the truth about carnism, so they can make their food choices freely — because without awareness, there is no free choice. Beyond Carnism seeks to empower concerned citizens and vegan advocates through education and activism, to help create a more compassionate and just world for all beings, human and nonhuman alike.”

Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters

Book: “Vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters can feel like they’re living in different worlds. Many vegans and vegetarians struggle to feel understood and respected in a meat-eating culture, where some of their most pressing concerns and cherished beliefs are invisible, and where they are often met with defensiveness when they try to talk about the issue. They can become frustrated and struggle to feel connected with meat eaters. And meat eaters can feel disconnected from vegans and vegetarians whose beliefs they don’t fully understand and whose frustration may spill over into their interactions. The good news is that relationship and communication breakdown among vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters is not inevitable, and it is reversible. With the right tools, healthy connections can be cultivated, repaired, and even strengthened. In Beyond Beliefs, internationally recognized food psychology expert and longtime relationship coach Dr. Melanie Joy provides easy-to-understand, actionable advice so you can: • Learn the principles and tools for creating healthy relationships • Understand how to communicate about even the most challenging topics effectively • Recognize how the psychology of being vegan/vegetarian or of being a meat eater affects your relationships with others, and with yourself”
