Meet the Meatocracy

“This is the story of the “Meatocracy” and our global campaign to evolve beyond it. The “Meatocracy” comprising Big Meat, Big Pharma, Big Chem and Big Media is the weakest link in the “Corporatocracy” that is destroying the planet, torturing the animals and ruining our health, because it is entirely dependent on our willingness to play along. Meat Kills

“Directed by Mayank Jain and conceptualized by Shri Jai Kishan ‘JK’ Jhaver, this science-based film raises issues about the role of poor lifestyle—especially improper eating habits—in the spread of chronic diseases like cancer, cardio vascular diseases, diabetes, kidney disorders, neurological problems etc. The prevalent western diet results in consumption of huge amounts of animal proteins, dietary cholesterol, saturated fats and harmful chemicals which play a key role in the spread of life-threatening disorders. This diet, unlike a whole-foods-plant-based diet, lacks ‘good-health-agents’ like dietary fiber, anti-oxidants and phyto-nutrients. Owing to higher intake of animal-based food and fast foods, there is an abnormally high increase in the spread of colorectal cancers, heart problems, kidney failures and type-2 diabetes throughout the world. The film gives plenty of evidence to portray the negative influence of bad diets to human health—by drawing heavily from studies carried out by topmost international medical institutions. The data shows conclusively that some of the most dangerous chronic diseases could not only be controlled but even reversed with help of a low-fat-whole-foods-plant-based diet.”

Meat Eater’s Guide to Climate Change & Health

“EWG’s Meat Eater’s Guide to Climate Change + Health can help you green your diet. It provides useful information about the climate, environmental and health impact of your protein choices…To assess climate impacts, EWG partnered with CleanMetrics, an environmental analysis and consulting firm, to do lifecycle assessments of 20 popular types of meat (including fish), dairy and vegetable proteins. Unlike most studies that focus just on production emissions, our assessment calculates the full “cradle-to-grave” carbon footprint of each food item based on the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated before and after the food leaves the farm – from the pesticides and fertilizer used to grow animal feed all the way through the grazing, animal raising, processing, transportation, cooking and, finally, disposal of unused food.”

Maple Farm Sanctuary

“Maple Farm Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary providing lifelong homes for abused, abandoned and unwanted farmed animals while promoting veganism and respect for all life through public information. Maple Farm Sanctuary has taken in a fraction of the billions of farmed animals that are bought, sold, tormented and slaughtered by the meat, dairy and fur industries. At Maple Farm Sanctuary, we strive to treat both humans and non-humans as individuals who are worthy of compassion and respect, where we pursue a vegan diet and a non-violent lifestyle and where our stewardship of these 120 acres of beautiful Massachusetts farmland and wildlife habitat is a sacred trust. We ourselves once raised and sent to slaughter animals as a means of making a living. As a result of a profound change of consciousness, we now choose to see the world and animals in a very different light. We have dedicated our lives to completing our transformation from animal farmers to animal rescuers and caretakers, and to sharing what we have discovered along the way with as many people as possible.”

Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat

Book: “When former cattle rancher Howard Lyman appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 to share his insider view of the danger of Mad Cow Disease spreading to this country, his revelations about the beef industry prompted a group of Texas cattlemen to file a lawsuit charging Lyman and the talk show host with “food disparagement.” That wasn’t enough to silence Howard Lyman, and in this stirring account of his journey from meat-loving cowboy to vegetarian environmental activist, he tells the whole truth about the catastrophic consequences of an animal-based diet…Persuasive, straightforward, and full of the down-home good humor and optimism of a son of the soil, Mad Cowboy is both an inspirational story of personal transformation and a convincing call to action for a plant-based diet — for the good of the planet and the health of us all.”

The Living Planet Report 2018 is the twelfth edition of the report and provides the scientific evidence to what nature has been telling us repeatedly: unsustainable human activity is pushing the planet’s natural systems that support life on Earth to the edge. Through multiple indicators including the Living Planet Index (LPI), provided by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the report shows us the urgent need for a new global deal for nature and people with clear, ambitious goals, targets and metrics, to reverse the devastating trend of biodiversity loss currently impacting the one planet we all call home.”

Livestock and Climate Change

“What if the key actors in climate change are…cows, pigs, and chickens?…Whenever the causes of climate change are discussed, fossil fuels top the list. Oil, natural gas, and especially coal are indeed major sources of human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases(GHGs). But we believe that the life cycle and supply chain of domesticated animals raised for food have been vastly underestimated as a source of GHGs, and in fact account for at least half of all human-caused GHGs. If this argument is right, it implies that replacing livestock products with better alternatives would be the best strategy for reversing climate change. In fact, this approach would have far more rapid effects on GHG emissions and their atmospheric concentrations—and thus on the rate the climate is warming—than actions to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy.” 10 page pdf

We provide those with the most heartbreaking stories hope and the promise of the freedom to be themselves. A promise of companionship, of love, and of care. Our sanctuary is home to 200 non-human animals who have seen the very worst of humanity and every day they amaze us with their profound abilities to love and to be loved, even after the tragedies they have endured. Our goal is to share their stories with the community and bring about positive change in the way they are viewed by society. By fostering beautiful, meaningful bonds between people and the animals they may see as “food” or as “things” we are changing the future for the individuals who mean so much to us. People who visit and volunteer at the sanctuary often comment on the unique sense of peace they feel when being here. All of our residents cohabitate peacefully and have strong friendships with one another. They know they are safe and loved. We like to call it a kind of magic created by love, trust, and understanding.”

Hope – The Film

Film: “Half of the population in Western society suffers from being overweight. Cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes and cancer are epidemic. Our meat consumption has quintupled over the past 50 years. 65 billion land animals are being slaughtered every year for food consumption. One third of the global grain production is fed to animals for fattening while 1.8 billion people worldwide suffer from hunger and starvation. Can there really be a solution to all these problems? It was the search for an answer to this question that led Austrian author and filmmaker Nina Messinger on a journey through Europe, India and the US to investigate the consequences of our diet. Meeting with leading experts in nutrition, medicine, science, and agriculture, as well as with farmers and people who have recovered from severe illnesses, simply by changing their eating habits. The film´s deeply distressing images and moving stories make a clear case for a plant-based diet that is not just a short-lived lifestyle trend but provides a solution for preserving our entire world. The movie serves up a stunningly simple, yet comprehensive solution – right on our plates. Changing our eating habits will rebalance not just our health, but the planet itself. H.O.P.E. is a life-changing documentary uncovering and revealing the effects of our typical Western diet high in animal-based foods. It contrasts the limited interests of the pharmaceutical and agricultural industry with the all-encompassing interests of living beings on this planet and with the power of responsible consumer action. H.O.P.E. is an urgent call to action to all of us to commit to a change towards sustainability and safeguarding our living environment. It has a clear message: By changing our eating habits, we can change the world!”

Growl: Life Lessons, Hard Truths, and Bold Strategies from an Animal Advocate

Yet, as Stallwood reveals in this memoir of an eventful life dedicated to social justice for the voiceless, finding the truest path for progress has meant learning a lot along the way. Equal parts personal narrative, social history, and impassioned call for rethinking animal advocacy, Growl describes Stallwood’s journey from a meat-eating slaughterhouse worker to a vegan activist for all species. He explains the importance of four key values in animal rights philosophy and practice―compassion, truth, nonviolence, and justice―and how a deeper understanding of their role not only leads us to discover our humanity for animals, but also for ourselves.”

Green Is the New Red: An Insider’s Account of a Social Movement Under Siege

Book: “At a time when everyone is going green, most people are unaware that the FBI is using anti-terrorism resources to target environmentalists and animal rights activists. The courts are being used to push conventional boundaries of what constitutes “terrorism” and to hit nonviolent activists with disproportionate sentences. Some have faced terrorism charges for simply chalking slogans on the sidewalk. Like the Red Scare, this “Green Scare” is about fear and intimidation, using a word—”eco-terrorist”—to push a political agenda, instill fear and silence dissent. The animal rights and environmental movements directly threaten corporate profits every time activists encourage people to go vegan, to stop driving, to consume fewer resources and live simply. Their boycotts are damaging, and corporations and the politicians who represent them know it. In many ways, the Green Scare, like the Red Scare, can be seen as a culture war, a war of values.”

“Friends of Animals (FoA) is a non-profit, international animal advocacy organization, incorporated in the state of New York since 1957. Friends of Animals advocates for the rights of nonhuman animals, free-living and domestic. Our goal is to free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world. The organization has evolved from its beginnings as the most comprehensive low-cost spay neuter program in the country. Friends of Animals now places critical habitat, wildlife protection and veganism at the core of animal advocacy. We are constantly doing legislative outreach to get laws passed (some drafted by us) that will protect animals or to stop laws that harm animals in their tracks.”

Freshwater Abuse and Loss: Where Is It All Going?

“Along with climate change, perhaps the most pressing concern we have regarding sustaining our lives, and future life on earth, is our supply of fresh water. From 1941 to 2011 the world’s population has tripled, but freshwater consumption has quadrupled, which is predicted to leave forty percent of the world’s population facing severe water stress by the year 2020….The long-term solution to our looming freshwater crises can be found on our plates. Why wait until we run out of water? Make the change to a water-smart, purely plant-based diet today—and then inspire others to do the same!”

Free Range Fraud

“Free Range Fraud is a campaign by Animal Liberation Victoria (ALV) to expose the reality of free range farming. Free range animal ‘products’ have been gaining popularity as the public become more aware of conditions inside what are typically understood as ‘factory farms’. However, the public have little knowledge of what is behind the free range label they are purchasing, and the industry has done a good job of feeding the public lies that these are ‘humane choices’.”

FoodPrint

“Whether it’s a salad, a hamburger or your morning egg sandwich, your meal has an impact on the environment and on the welfare of animals, food/farm workers and on public health. Your “foodprint” is the result of everything it takes to get your food from the farm to your plate. Many of those processes are invisible to consumers. Industrial food production — including animal products like beef, pork, chicken and eggs and also crops — takes a tremendous toll on our soil, air and water, as well as on the workers and the surrounding communities.”

Fish Feel

“Fish Feel is the first organization devoted to promoting the recognition of fish as sentient beings deserving of respect and compassion. Despite fish constituting the largest category of animals used for food (including as farmed animal feed), and despite huge numbers of fish harmed for research, “sport,” and aquaria, their well-being receives very little attention, even from the animal protection community. Fish Feel primarily serves to help educate the public as to why these animals are deserving of our admiration and appreciation, the immense problems caused by the exploitation of them, and how we can help them.”

Food doesn’t need to be part of the climate problem. In fact, the exciting news is that food can actually play a starring role in climate solutions. “… animals that are able to feel, suffer and rejoice, to respect, to ensure their well-being is the moral duty of every man … On the initiative of 3 individuals. The foundation and motors of the Foundation were Márta Friwaldszky until his death in 1997. The Foundation’s assets are managed by the Board of Trustees. The members of the Board of Trustees perform their duties in their free time without the slightest consideration. The Foundation has a paid employee, our work is assisted by our volunteers. As a result of our activity, we have become a nationally recognized and recognized animal protection organization. We are members of the World Federation of Animal Welfare (WSPA) and the Royal British Defense Association (RSPCA), where we get a lot of ideas and help. The awareness of our organization obliges us to publicize and undertake, talk about batteries or even “swept under the carpet”, but not less important for animal protection problems that call for a solution. This is the purpose of our ongoing press releases, our opinion, our legal assistance, our educational program and, last but not least, the Civil Protection Ombudsman’s Office, which was established on January 1, 2009 at our own expense.”
