SNCC: The New Abolitionists influenced a generation of activists struggling for civil rights and seeking to learn from the successes and failures of those who built the fantastically influential Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Book: “Social ecology addresses the burning question of how to apply ecological understanding to every aspect of our lives. The twenty-seven contributors, all of whom have directly or indirectly contributed to the teaching of social ecology in Australia and beyond, share their experiences in this “coming of age” anthology of keynote articles. These are of particular relevance to educators and students. The book provides a holistic framework for change, based on the interrelationships among the personal, social, environmental, and spiritual. It helps the reader realize how we got where we are and how to better understand sustainable, caring futures. Students from all disciplines can use this valuable resource to help enrich their learning with insights and principles from the field of social ecology. The introduction maps social ecology as an emerging field. Articles about place, story, nature, education, and community illustrate ways to apply our understanding of social ecology, systems theory, transformative learning, holistic education, empathic intelligence, sense of place, shamanic practices, poetic inquiry, archetypal theory, deep ecology, aesthetics, creativity, curriculum design, drama education, cross-cultural learning, and indigenous knowing. Includes inspiring stories of activists and community educators applying the wisdom of social ecology at the leading edge of change, including a chapter by tCA director James Whelan.”

“Committed to improving the lives of Iditarod sled dogs and providing truthful information about their treatment…The Iditarod is a dog sled race that begins the first Saturday in March each year in Alaska. In this race mushers (dog sled drivers) force their dogs to run 1,000 miles from Anchorage to Nome in 8 to 16 days over a grueling terrain. This is the approximate distance between New York City and Miami. Mushers press their dogs to run at ever increasing speeds, so that the dogs get little rest or sleep. Mitch Seavey holds the speed record of 8 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes and 13 seconds. This is less than half the time it took to run the first Iditarod race. No dog wants to run so far or so fast, or can do it without enduring great suffering. At times, Iditarod has been described as an exciting contest of man against nature. These descriptions do not tell us about the dogs’ untold suffering. Dog deaths and injuries are common in the Iditarod, and when they are not racing, the dogs live under inhumane conditions.”

There has been unprecedented priority given in recent years to sustainable cities and green building (a very positive trend), but too often the result are places that are not especially green in the literal sense. It is a story about the anti-democratic influence of big business, political expediency, abuse of power, manipulation of the news media and misleading a Royal Commission. We are a small but motivated group of individuals dedicated to furnishing the basics–namely, food, water, and skill sets–essential to the success of direct action campaigns and mass mobilizations. It is our intention to use our skills and equipment, not merely to provide a “service,” but rather to promote individual empowerment and community solidarity by providing an effective and adaptable framework. As a small collective, we cannot, by ourselves, cook for 5,000 people. But by providing kitchen equipment and a certain level of experience, we can work with and facilitate a group of people to cook , deliver, and serve a meal on such a scale. Seeds of Peace is dedicated to feeding, training, and in all ways supporting the practitioners of radical political change. We have a mobile kitchen that can serve thousands, we have the experience and determination to assist in organizing mass mobilizations and direct action campaigns, and we offer a wide variety of trainings, incuding: campaign strategizing, nonviolent direct action- and mass action tactics, community health and safety, guerilla kitchen basics, and action first aid. The U.S. Government knew this in the 19th century when it forced Native American children into government boarding schools. Today, volunteers build schools in traditional societies around the world, convinced that school is the only way to a ‘better’ life for indigenous children. But is this true? What really happens when we replace a traditional culture’s way of learning and understanding the world with our own? SCHOOLING THE WORLD takes a challenging, sometimes funny, ultimately deeply disturbing look at the effects of modern education on the world’s last sustainable indigenous cultures.”

Fiona Oakes has made a name for herself as a unique endurance runner. She is the fastest woman in the world to run a marathon on all seven continents, and the north pole, in both cumulative and elapsed time. Fiona’s achievements are made even more astounding due to the fact that she was told at age 14 that she would never walk properly, let alone ever run. She would undergo more than 17 radical knee surgeries which ultimately led to having her entire right kneecap removed. The process was agonizing, the rehab worse, the records she’s gone on to set even more astounding. With overcoming her own adversity, Fiona’s true drive to achieve incredible feats of speed and human endurance are motivated by a deep desire to raise awareness for the plight of animals. Her achievements help fund a 450+ animal sanctuary that she takes care of every day. “

Their story has turned into a mission to build an organization that rescues farm animals; and to be good stewards of their care forever in a sanctuary determined to become a state of the art animal care facility, and a plant based/environmental resource education center. Rowdy Girl Sanctuary will inspire other ranchers to experience a paradigm shift, and help them move from participating in the cruelty of factory farming to living out compassion towards the animals whose lives usually end in brutal death. This is Rowdy Girl Sanctuary’s greatest goal. “

Book: “Katya Andresen, a veteran marketer and nonprofit professional, demystifies winning marketing campaigns by reducing them to ten essential rules and provides entertaining examples and simple steps for applying the rules ethically and effectively to good causes of all kinds. The Robin Hood rules steal from the winning formulas for selling socks, cigarettes, and even mattresses, with good advice for appealing to your audiences’ values, not your own; developing a strong, competitive stance; and injecting into every message four key elements that compel people to take notice. Andresen, who is also a former journalist, also reveals the best route to courting her former colleagues in the media and getting your message into their reporting.”

Book: “How did the American right wing, which began as a small clique of post-World War II conservative intellectuals, transform into well-heeled, grassroots movements representing millions of ordinary citizens? Providing insight into today’s headlines, Roads to Dominion answers this question with a compelling and thorough look at the broad range of right-wing movements in this country. Based on research that draws extensively from primary source literature, Sara Diamond traces the development of four types of right-wing movements over the past 50 yearsm-the anticommunist conservative movement, the racist Right, the Christian Right, and the neoconservativesm-and provides an astute historical analysis of each. Maintaining a nonjudgmental tone throughout the book, she explores these movements’ roles within the political process and examines their relationships with administrations in power.”

“Hi! My name is Ren Hurst. I’m an author, social entrepreneur, and spiritual activist that is rewilding hearts and undomesticating lives through interspecies relationships. As a former professional horse trainer, I spent nearly two decades mastering how to modify the behavior of others to suit my own needs. All that changed when I stumbled upon a radically different approach, whose philosophy I combined with other areas of my own experience/education to reach far beyond horsemanship. Today, my life is dedicated to speaking up for animals and teaching people what I’ve learned from choosing love over exploitation. “

“Are you ready to rewild your heart so you can undomesticate your life? The wild in you hears the calling of your soul. It is your true nature and most authentic self. For far too long we have lived domesticated lives perpetuated by our domestication of others. In doing so, we cut ourselves off from the wisdom of the wild. I’m here to help you restore the connection to your soul’s guidance through a body of work I call Sanctuary13; a set of 13 practically applied principles that can undomesticate your life and empower you to be the person you were meant to be. Our animal kin have a lot to teach us about the true power and unconditional nature of love. Using Sanctuary13, I guide people in revolutionizing their relationships with animals, removing obstacles that are likely keeping them from leading a truly fulfilling and inspired life. The animals, of course, benefit tremendously as well.”

We organize through decentralized local groups that support one another with shared resources, ideas, fundraising, training and collaborations. Our activities include grassroots community organizing, publishing educational materials, organizing creative direct actions and protests, and holding public education events in order to further the struggle for climate justice.”

“We are a network of business leaders, investors, and inheritors in the richest 5% of wealth and/or income in the U.S. that believes that growing inequality is not in our best interest, nor in the best interest of society. As beneficiaries of economic policies tilted in their favor, we feel a responsibility to join with others in examining and changing the corporate and government policies that widen the economic gap. As wealthy and upper-income individuals, we speak out — in Congress, in the media, and in corporate boardrooms — for progressive taxes and greater corporate accountability. Responsible Wealth is a project of United for a Fair Economy — an organization that supports workers organizing and advocating for policies that make our economy more fair and equitable. Responsible Wealth and United for a Fair Economy make a powerful partnership — one that challenges decision makers and politicians to act in the best interests of the people our economy is supposed to serve. By becoming a member of the Responsible Wealth Project, you are able to use your unique voice to support a variety of progressive groups working on many economic, racial, and social justice issues.”
