Chomping Climate Change – Blog

Blog. “Chomping Climate Change addresses the failure of politicians for more than 20 years to implement international policies on climate change. Now most people don’t trust what politicians say about climate change. But we explain that there’s a fast and inexpensive opportunity to reverse climate change – by replacing most of today’s least eco-friendly food products with better alternatives. Raising animals for food uses an estimated 45% of all land on earth, and most of that land was once forested – and it can be reforested with trees that will draw down carbon from our atmosphere to a safe level.”

Changing the Game: Animal Liberation in the Twenty-First Century

“Norm Phelps has long been one of the leading theoreticians, historians, and strategists of the animal advocacy movement. His new book collects his recent writings on this subject, as well as offers in print for the first time a fully revised and updated version of the e-book he published with Lantern in 2013 (978-1-59056-379-3). Phelps argues that faced with the overwhelming wealth and power of the animal exploitation industries, animal activists are like David trying to stand up to Goliath. But rather than following the unsuccessful strategies of the past, Phelps proposes that we change the game by adopting David’s strategy of refusing to play by Goliath’s rules. Additional essays explore class and race in animal advocacy, the place of public policy vs. private morality in creating social change, and the unyielding barrier of human exceptionalism. Trenchant, wise, and deeply committed to the reduction of suffering and the liberation of animals, Changing the Game is sure to offer animal advocates much food for thought as the movement charts a way forward for all sentient beings. “

Center for Effective Vegan Advocacy

“The Center for Effective Vegan Advocacy (CEVA) aims to increase the impact of vegan advocacy worldwide. CEVA is a program of Beyond Carnism, a charitable organization dedicated to exposing and transforming carnism, the invisible belief system that conditions people to eat certain animals. The production and consumption of animals is a leading cause of widespread animal and human suffering and environmental damage, and it is enabled by carnism – a global system of oppression. Veganism is the counterpoint to carnism, so increasing the power of the vegan movement is a key to ending carnism. At CEVA, we aim to empower the vegan movement by empowering advocates and organizations. Through offering on-site trainings, organizational consulting, grants to qualifying organizations, and a strategy resource center, we seek to increase the effectiveness of vegans and vegan organizations and therefore to increase the impact of the vegan movement as a whole.”

Bioneers: California Climate Leadership e-Book

“13 of California’s top climate leaders illuminate why the state’s game-changing climate policies are serving as models for local, regional, and national policy change worldwide. This is a must-read for climate activists, policymakers, citizen advocates, sustainable tech and design professionals—anyone with an interest in what it takes to advance visionary and practical solutions to climate disruption. Over the past decade, California has managed to decouple the growth of greenhouse gas emissions and the economy, reducing per capita emissions by 17% while maintaining one of the most robust economies in the U.S. With nearly 200,000 clean energy jobs, a vibrant economy, and poised to invest literally hundreds of billions of dollars into a low carbon economy, the world’s eighth largest economic engine is positioning itself as a model for the world. In the fall of 2014, as part of the 25th annual Bioneers Conference, Bioneers convened a very special gathering of key leaders to help start a conversation that seemed long overdue: California’s leadership role in the global effort to combat climate change. This volume, taken from talks given at the 2014 event, is both an accessible and detailed look at some of the key areas where California is particularly out in front.”

Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters

They can become frustrated and struggle to feel connected with meat eaters. And meat eaters can feel disconnected from vegans and vegetarians whose beliefs they don’t fully understand and whose frustration may spill over into their interactions. The good news is that relationship and communication breakdown among vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters is not inevitable, and it is reversible. With the right tools, healthy connections can be cultivated, repaired, and even strengthened. In Beyond Beliefs, internationally recognized food psychology expert and longtime relationship coach Dr. Melanie Joy provides easy-to-understand, actionable advice so you can: • Learn the principles and tools for creating healthy relationships • Understand how to communicate about even the most challenging topics effectively • Recognize how the psychology of being vegan/vegetarian or of being a meat eater affects your relationships with others, and with yourself”

Beginner’s Guide to Veganic Gardening

“Vegan-organic gardening avoids not only the use of toxic sprays and chemicals, but also manures and animal remains… In veganic growing situations, soil fertility is maintained using vegetable compost, green manures, crop rotation, mulching, and other sustainable, ecological methods. Occasional use of lime, gypsum, rock phosphorus, dolomite, rock dusts and rock potash can be helpful, but we try not to depend on these fertilizers as they are non-renewable resources. Soil conditioners and fertilizers that are vegan-organic and ecologically sustainable include hay mulch, wood ash, composted organic matter (fruit/vegetable peels, leaves and grass clippings), green manures/nitrogen-fixing cover crops (fava beans/clover/alfalfa/lupines), liquid feeds (such as comfrey or nettles), and seaweed (fresh, liquid or meal) for trace elements.”

Be Fair Be Vegan

“Why vegan? You already know the answer. You may not know all the facts of animal exploitation, but you do know that animals must suffer and die in order to become the products you choose to consume. You may not know all the sobering facts of animal agriculture’s impact on the environment, world hunger and human health, but you do know that human actions are destroying the planet, that many of its inhabitants are starving, and that there is a direct link between diet and health. You may not know all the practical details of living vegan, but you do know, and already live by, the fundamental truth that causing harm for pleasure is not a “personal choice” but an abhorrent abuse of power, and that refusing to impose misery and death for a taste, a trinket, a thrill, is not a sacrifice, but the most basic act of human decency. Please take a moment to learn who is spared when we live vegan, and who suffers when we choose not to. Familiarize yourself with the many, and serious, reasons for becoming vegan but remember that you already hold the key and the answer: your conscience. Act on it.”

Advocate for Animals!: An Abolitionist Vegan Handbook

“This book is a call to action. Since the beginning of time, there have been—in total—about 110 billion humans who have lived and died. We kill more nonhuman animals than that every single year. Think about that for a second. Our exploitation of nonhumans represents violence on a scale that is unparalleled. The largest number of animals we kill is for food—about 60 billion land animals and at least one trillion sea animals killed annually. And there are many billions more killed every year for various other reasons, including biomedical research, entertainment, and sport….In Advocate for Animals! – An Abolitionist Vegan Handbook, Gary Francione and Anna Charlton, two of the original pioneers of this Abolitionist movement, provide a practical guide about how you can become an effective voice in this most important movement for justice. They give you all sorts of ideas of how to advocate, and provide many examples of actual discussions so that you can see the sorts of approaches you can use in your own discussions with others.”

Abundant Living in the Coming Age of the Tree

“The practical and philosophical basis for ecological veganism – that we can feed the world healthily and compassionately and protect the planet with a diverse, mostly home grown, plant-based diet that includes tree crops…We are faced with the challenge of providing for the needs of a rapidly increasing world population from the diminishing resources of a finite and endangered planet. Fundamental changes in the values and practices of the dominant world system, which has created a situation in which millions of people and animals already suffer extreme deprivation and die prematurely, is essential. What is needed is a trend towards compassionate living the vegan way, with the emphasis on the use of trees and their products. As people face the challenge of environmental crises, as the supreme importance of using awesome intellectual powers with compassion for all sentient beings is realised, an evolutionary leap will be achieved. An era of truly abundant living will dawn in which humans, at peace with themselves, with each other and with all living creatures, will reach heights of creativity as yet unimagined.”

A Prayer for Compassion

Film: “A Prayer for Compassion is a feature length documentary that strives to inspire and encourage those already on a religious or spiritual path, to expand their circle of compassion to embrace all life, regardless of species, and make choices in alignment with this value. The film follows Thomas Jackson on a quest across America, that ultimately takes him to Morocco for the UN Climate Conference and throughout the Indian subcontinent to ask the question, “Can compassion grow to include all beings? and Can people who identify as religious or spiritual come to embrace the call to include all human and nonhuman beings in our circle of respect and caring and love?””

A History of The China Study

“In the early 1980’s, nutritional biochemist T. Colin Campbell, PhD of Cornell University, in partnership with researchers at Oxford University and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, embarked upon one of the most comprehensive nutritional studies ever undertaken known as the China Project. China at that time presented researchers with a unique opportunity. The Chinese population tended to live in the same area all their lives and to consume the same diets unique to each region. Their diets (low in fat and high in dietary fiber and plant material) also were in stark contrast to the rich diets of the Western countries. The truly plant-based nature of the rural Chinese diet gave researchers a chance to compare plant-based diets with animal-based diets…In 2005, T. Colin Campbell, PhD and his son Thomas M. Campbell, MD, shared the China Project findings along with additional research with the world in The China Study. Their best selling book examines the connection between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer and the source of nutritional confusion produced by powerful lobbies, government entities, and opportunistic scientists. The China Study is hailed as one of the most important books about diet and health ever written…Our reference library provides links to the online abstracts of the studies used in each chapter.”

A Brief History of Veganism, by Victoria Moran

“When I ask new students at Main Street Vegan Academy about vegan food, they’re geniuses. Nutrition? Well informed. Animal rights? Check. But when the questions are about the history of our movement, even the best and the brightest can fall short. I believe it’s important that we know where we came from, and there’s plenty of grist for that mill, because eating plants goes back, well, about as far as we do.”

A Declaration for Human/Earth/Animal Liberation

“In the Great Turning, Joanna Macy outlines three dimensions of the Great Transition from an industrial-growth, ownership society to a life-enriching, stewardship society: 1. Block that which is destroying us. 2. Create something new to replace it. 3. Change our story and relationship with the Earth. Unfortunately, we have many villains to pick among that which is destroying us: inequality, fossil fuels, capitalism, pollution, etc. However, there is one villain that hardly anyone ever talks about: animal agriculture. And as far as villains go, animal agriculture can don the mantle of a SuperVillain.”
